Mysore Style (self-practice) Classes
Mysore style, or self-practice is the traditional method of learning Ashtanga vinyasa yoga. It is named after the city of Mysore, India where the roots of this method are and where it is still taught in the traditional way. Each student moves with their own breath through a sequence of postures appropriate for them. Students progress at their own pace. Through hands-on adjustments and verbal cues from the teacher they find their way deeper into postures. Small groups allow the teacher to build a relationship with each student and their practice, better enabling the teacher to address the specific needs of each student. Students of all levels practice together, each working in a way that is appropriate for them while enjoying the energy of practicing with a group. Students of all levels are welcome to attend. No experience is necessary, just a willingness to learn.
Led Classes
Led classes are an opportunity to experience the dynamic flow of the Ashtanga vinyasa primary series. This sequence of postures focuses on developing a balance of strength and flexibility in the body. The sequence of postures is coordinated with breath, referred to as vinyasa (breath and movement). Depending on the experience of the group, the class will move together on the cues of the teacher through all or part of the Ashtanga vinyasa primary series.

Student Perspectives: Why Practice Ashtanga Yoga?
"I had taken several different yoga classes before, but I always felt like there was something missing. Ashtanga just clicked for me. I like the fact that Ashtaga is physically challenging. I also feel like the focus on the breath makes the difference-I feel more connected with it rather than just moving through poses somewhat aimlessly."
"I love the dynamic connection of breath and movement in this practice, making the postures flow into one another. I also appreciate that Ashtanga encourages independence and home practice (through the traditional Mysore practice style), which makes the journey feel more personal and intimate."
"I practice Ashtanga yoga because I like the flow of the practice. Every posture prepares the body for the next posture, opening the muscles for a deeper stretch and contraction throughout the length of the muscles."
"The asana practice of Ashtanga yoga opens the body, generates heat, and increases concentration like no other style of yoga that I have practiced. By focusing on the breath and bandhas (locks) harmony between mind and body is achieved. A logical pose/counterpose sequence of postures are connected through moving meditation. I leave my practice invigorated, clear-headed and more prepared to handle the challenges of life."
